Mission Progress To Date:

The Bell 430 Around-the-World flight is moving smoothly and staying on schedule. Foggy weather at Huntington, West Virginia made the landing a little more interesting that normal, but the crew landed safely without incident. The rest of the day went well, with the Bell 430 performing superbly. The crew seems to be in very good spirits, sending messages sprinkled with dry humor. You can read some of these below. The crew stopped at Worthington, Minnesota for the night. They plan to leave early in the morning for Fargo, North Dakota, so as to arrive in time for a big reception at Bell Helicopter Textron in Fort Worth, where Mrs. Bower and Mrs. Williams will be able to see their globe-trotting husbands for the first time in several weeks.
Today the fliers passed the one third mark! They have traveled 7,470 nautical miles with 13,078 nautical miles to go.

In-Flight Report - August 21, 1996 - Day 5, Number 1
On time departure from Knoxville, Tennessee. We were interviewed by local NBC TV. Estimated arrival time at Huntington, West Virginia is 8:25 AM EDST. The weather in Huntington is foggy, may cause a delay. Will see and advise. Will make a stop at the Allison Engine plant. Looks like we will be between weather systems today. Based on popular demand, we will try to stay on schedule through Thursday, then afterburners back on. Only problems are things we cannot control like wind and weather. Really appreciate the great support team effort. John and I are in good spirits and rested after 6 hours sleep. We had breakfast this morning for a change. Both of us are getting thinner. We normally leave the hotel before breakfast is served and get to the next hotel after the restaurant is closed. Nice folks have given us sandwiches for lunch in several places. Everyone on the ground and ATC has been really helpful. We got a priority handling code in the ATC computer between Tallahassee and New Orleans yesterday. Lots of interest from all quarters. Will advise you again after takeoff from Huntington. Thanks. All is well. Glad you are there. Regards, Ron Bower and John Williams, Crew of the N430Q

In-Flight Report - August 21, 1996 - Day 5, Number 2
Bad fog at Huntington, West Virginia. Sky obscured with half visibility due to the fog. Shot an ILS approach to 200 feet and had to do a missed approach and go around. On the go around, a big hole in the fog appeared over the other end of the runway and we worked out with tower to cancel IFR and land VFR. Quick turn and on to Indy. No one met us at Huntington. We are going to quit shining our shoes. Stopping at Allison Engine plant. ETA 10:30 AM EDST. Expect to land at Indy airport by 11:00 AM EDST. We will be on Central Daylight Savings Time after leaving Indy. We will navigate so as to cut across the southwest tip of Michigan before we proceed to Milwaukee. So far we are on target to land in or fly over 49 of the 50 states. However, I am ready to get to the larger western states - they are easier to hit. All is well. Glad you are there. Regards, Ron Bower and John Williams, Crew of the N430Q
